Audio Filer allows you to find, sort, and group your MP3 files to locate and play them more quickly. This small program can carry out all of these tasks, and some more. It is capable of scanning one or more of your folders containing audio files, and of generating a hierarchical list where you can find your favorite tracks classified by author or by album name, among other categories.

Even though the program’s documentation mentions "audio files", Audio Filer actually supports MP3 files only. When you run the program for the first time, it automatically opens the "Options" Window and invites you to add one or more of your audio folders to be analyzed - your organized list of files will be ready in a moment. The program allows you to group and sort your files according to different parameters or a combination of them: by album, by artist and album sorted by album, by artist and album sorted by year, or by genre, artist, and album. However, it is very important that the ID3 tag information embedded in your files is correct, so that the program can build its classifications accurately. You can also select one of your files and play it, or create a playlist with a few of them, or allow the program to select one or more tracks randomly and either play them back or put them in a queue.

The program offers several methods for you to enjoy your files – using the built-in audio file player, the Windows default media player, WinAmp Media Player (the program appears to be specially designed to work together with it), or through any other audio player that you can call via command-line.

Audio Filer comes with many additional functions and features. One of the most useful ones is the ID3 Tag Editor, which allows you to view and change the ID3 tag information included in your MP3 files in a very comprehensive way. This includes support for ID3 Version 1 and 2 tags, and the possibility of loading a picture that you can attach to your file.

Though Audio Filer might seem to be a bit difficult to use and understand in the first place, the comprehensive variety of functions it offers is worth the effort. Besides that, it is free, which makes it a very attractive option.
